ABS - Ontario Youth Basketball League announcement! ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League, announces exciting additions to the Platinum Clubs. As the ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League continues to expand we are focused on strategic geographical areas which match our long term vision and growth plans. Burlington Basketball and Milton Stags have been awarded Platinum Club status. Platinum Clubs are City & Region (based on market size) organizations committed to entering a team at each age group. These clubs have developmental and rep programs at all ages and are also committed to both boy's and girl's programs.

Consolidation from small multiple clubs into one larger city based club will help strengthen the club and the ABS going forward. This is a positive step forward in building a stronger brand. The Club is focused on long term growth and is a strategic geographical area for ABS Expansion.

Milton Stags is a growing organization and is aligned with the long term vision of the ABS. Milton received a significant amount of attention after the 2006 and 2011 censuses indicated that Milton was the fastest growing municipality in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, with a 71.4% increase in population between 2001 and 2006, and a 56.4% increase in population between 2006 and 2011. ABS - Ontario Youth Basketball League Announcement!! Planning for the 2014-2015 Season to commence! At the end of March we plan on announcing the 2014-2015 franchises. This will be done for several reasons including scheduling which is the biggest challenge to a league. To improve on the scheduling for next year we are committed to the following; 1. We will ensure scheduling does not occur during March Break, Christmas Break or on any Canadian Statutory Holidays 2. We will set aside 1 weekend for each age group as a “Snow Day” rescheduling week. This means everyone will be able to plan taking this into consideration when booking tournaments. 3. We will work with the major clubs to ensure we do not conflict with tournament dates. 4. We will be twinning locations to work towards a 2 game gap maximum. This will also eliminate the ability to request specific times (i.e. no Saturday mornings) 5. We will plan to have the schedule for next year published by September. In most cases age groups will adopt the current schedule for the age group above (i.e. if you are Bantam this year see the current year Major Bantam Schedule for a guide to (dates only) for next years schedule) 6. We will be splitting the bigger pools into 2 groups to decrease disparity. We will also look at addressing disparity in the coming year through the use of two divisions and the potential of a promotion/relegation system. Prior feedback is that teams are not picked nor budgets established however as with all other leagues (i.e. hockey etc.) they do not determine the teams and pools in September after tryouts. In order for a Basketball League to be successful planning is a critical component. If your clubs/team is not part of a Platinum based club you will need to contact us prior to the end of this month. As always we appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Many of the changes above have come from the positive suggestions of members working towards improving our system and processes. Your support is appreciated, Best Regards, David.

    A Few Word About Us

ABS is an Ontario Youth Basketball League co-operative organization which supports Basketball Ontario in taking basketball in the Province to the next level. We have commenced the 2013-2014 season which includes grades 4-12 for boys and grades 7 & 8 for girls..

The ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League is a Not--for-profit initiative created through high level organizational talks.

ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League, Canada’s largest competitive youth boys & girls basketball league, Supporting Ontario Basketball, finished its first season of play in the 2012-2013 season. In September 2012 cities from across the GTA and beyond including Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Scarborough, Hamilton, Durham, and Kitchener/Waterloo with support from Oakville took part in a meeting of core member franchises to discuss a formal league creation. The hope was to revitalize youth basketball in order to take basketball in Ontario to the next level. The league format was the start of a plan to provide an opportunity to a traditionally underserviced boys and girls basketball constituency with the chance to compete in the starting of a Province-wide league. The ABS League is now planning for the second year 2013-2014 having announced a significant expansion to novice along with the start of a girls league.

    Inclement Weather Policy
In instances when the jurisdiction of the ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League is subjected to severe weather that requires consideration of the cancellation of ABS League games the following notification procedure will be followed:

    Notification Procedure:
    1. Any Decision relating to the cancellation of games will be made three hours prior to the commencement of the league game on a weekend.
    2. If a decision is made to cancel games, the Coach/Manager of each affected team will be contacted by email. It is expected that each Coach/Manager would then contact the players from each of his/her respective teams.
    3. On weekends, any cancellation of games will be posted on the ABS web site under cancellation (web page to be created under the schedule tab) the moment the decision to cancel games is made.
    4. Parents and team officials are requested NOT to call the ABS office or Gyms about the potential cancellation of games. The official notification system is via the ABS web site.

In the absence of a cancellation notice being posted on the ABS web site 2 Hours before the scheduled game on weekend’s parents, players and teams should assume that the League games will be played as scheduled. Most importantly, the ABS encourages parents to leave enough travel time to arrive safely and drive according to the weather conditions. .
